How to Break a WPM Plateau

Find the repeated bottleneck before adding more identical tests.

Check what is staying the same

A flat score may reflect the same difficult reach, a reading pause or a limit in the text you are choosing. Review several comparable sessions rather than assuming that more speed attempts are the only answer.

Isolate a small problem

Choose one recurring key group or word pattern. Practise it slowly enough to recognise the movement, then use it in a sentence at your normal pace.

Vary the task carefully

Alternate a focused skill session with a familiar passage. Change one factor at a time so the result tells you something useful about the adjustment.

Use a wider view

Long-term Progress trends can show changes hidden by day-to-day variation. A plateau in gross WPM may still accompany better accuracy or more consistent longer sessions.
