What Is Touch Typing?

Use a familiar finger pattern so your attention can stay on the text instead of searching for keys.

A repeatable starting point

Touch typing means finding keys primarily through learned movement rather than looking down for each letter. It is a skill built through repetition, not a requirement to type quickly from your first session.

Start with a small area

Learn the home-row positions first. Add a few nearby keys at a time and return to the starting position between reaches. A short sequence typed deliberately is more useful than a long sequence typed by guessing.

Keep your eyes on the task

Read the source and glance at your typed text when needed. If you lose your place, stop and find it again. Looking at the keyboard occasionally while learning does not cancel your progress.

Build a reliable habit

Use the same finger for a key during practice. Once the movements feel familiar, use words and sentences so the pattern works in meaningful text. Let speed follow dependable placement.
