How WPM Is Calculated
Understand the five-character word convention used by general KeyTute typing metrics.
Use a standard-length word
In the shared typing window and general Typing Tests, gross WPM is typed characters divided by five, divided by elapsed minutes. This is a measurement convention, not a count of dictionary words.
Work through an example
Typing 1,000 characters in five minutes gives 1,000 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 40 gross WPM. Spaces and punctuation contribute to the typed-character count.
Keep the conditions visible
A score needs its duration, content type and correction rules for a fair comparison. An easy word set and a long symbol-heavy passage are different tasks even when the final WPM matches.
Read exam units separately
Exam rules can select their own word length, net-speed penalties or KPH/KDPH measure. The exam instructions and result explain the configured calculation; do not assume the general formula settles every official test.
